Videogames Help Real CSI Solve Crimes

11.27.09

Soon, real criminal investigation teams will be using videogame technology to help forensic scientists collaborate virtually to re-create what happened at the scene of the crime.

by Reuters

RALEIGH, North Carolina - In hit TV crime drama show "C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation," and its two spin-offs, the criminologists use the latest technology to solve grisly murders and other crimes.

Soon, real criminal investigation teams will be using videogame technology to help forensic scientists collaborate virtually to re-create what happened at the scene of the crime.

"The problem is that while there have been major advancements in the field of forensic science technology, how investigative teams come together to collaborate has not changed over the years," said Dr. Mitzi Montoya, Zelnak Professor of Marketing and Innovation Management at North Carolina State University (NC State).

NC State recently received a $1.4 million grant from the National Science Foundation's Cyber-Enabled Discovery and Innovation (CDI) program to help lay a foundation that promotes greater collaboration in the field of forensic science - a platform they call IC-CRIME (interdisciplinary, cyber-enabled crime reconstruction through innovative methodology and engagement).

The IC-CRIME platform will employ the latest in 3-D laser scanning technologies and run on the Unity game engine technology, which powers over 50 commercial games like "FusionFall" and "VooDude."

The laser scanner technology, developed by Research Triangle Park company 3rdTech, will allow investigators to accurately record room and object dimensions, as well as the placement of every piece of evidence in a crime scene.

GAMING TO CRIME

The scanners can capture millions of data points at a crime scene within a few minutes and recreate highly detailed virtual crime scenes.

"The game world will be embedded within a Web page also containing data in the form of text and 2D graphics," said Dr. Michael Young, associate professor of computer science and an expert in serious gaming at NC State...

The Paint-Less Coca-Cola Would Save Earth One Can at a Time / Gizmodo

It doesn't only look beautiful, and it would make Jon Ive and Steve Jobs wet, but this naked Coca-Cola can would help save energy while reducing air and water pollution. Would it really make a difference? Let's do some math:

I assume the consumption only increases through time, but let's take the daily 2007 numbers from Global INForM Cases Sales database: The total number of Coca-Cola cans sold per worldwide is 67,873,309. Diet Coke and Coke Zero sold 35,387,241, while My Coke sold 103,260,550. Yes, that's all per day.

So using only classic Coca-Cola's daily sales figures, that means 24,773,757,785 are sold every year. Twenty-four billion cans. That is indeed a lot of paint and paint removal products. Because this doesn't only affect the production. It also affects the recycling process, eliminating one step:

The naked can help to reduce air and water pollution occurred in its coloring process. It also reduces energy and effort to separate toxic color paint from aluminum in recycling process. Huge amount of energy and paint required to manufacture colored cans will be saved. Instead of toxic paint, manufacturers process aluminum with a pressing machine that indicates brand identity on surface.

Sounds good to me, and it even looks better if you take into account all kinds of Coke. That brings up the number to 75,380,201,500 cans. I don't know how much paint that represents, but I'm guessing quite a few thousand tons. [7760 via Likecool, Sales info from Let's Get Together]

Analemma over Ukraine / APOD: 2007 June 17

Credit & Copyright: Vasilij Rumyantsev ( Crimean Astrophysical Obsevatory)

If you took a picture of the Sun at the same time each day, would it remain in the same position?

The answer is no, and the shape traced out by the Sun over the course of a year is called an analemma.

The Sun's apparent shift is caused by the Earth's motion around the Sun when combined with the tilt of the Earth's rotation axis. The Sun will appear at its highest point of the analemma during summer and at its lowest during winter.

Analemmas created from different Earth latitudes would appear at least slightly different, as well as analemmas created at a different time each day.

The analemma pictured to the left was built up by Sun photographs taken from 1998 August through 1999 August from Ukraine.

The foreground picture from the same location was taken during the early evening in 1999 July.

Burn David Nutt

Burn David Nutt

Science Vs morals (and stupidity)

When people look at the finger which is pointing at the moon...
Professor David Nutt has not only been sacked but is facing the stakes because of his scientific declaration ...

Remember: June 22 1633, the Italian scientist Galileo Galilei, then aged 70, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Congregation of the Holy Office, the judicial arm of the Inquisition. He was forced to recant the heliocentric theory of Copernicus, whose work has been put to the index 15 years earlier. But Urban VII, who had originally supported Galileo, transmutes the sentence under house arrest. Having renounced his belief in science and especially the fact that the earth turns on itself, Galileo would have whispered "And yet it moves". However it is likely that this phrase is a myth. The Church rehabilitated in 1992.

This hasn't much to do with 3D per se but is really scary.
